1.Modena (40 minutes by train)

Marvel at the Mercato Albinelli one of the best farmers markets in Italy. Tour a traditional balsamic vinegar producer (look for the DOP label) and don’t miss Osteria Francescana, one of the world’s best restaurants.
2. Parma (1 hour and 30 minutes by train)
Parma is a delight for both the eyes and the palate. Wander through its elegant streets to the Cathedral and Palazzo della Pilotta, then tour a dairy producing authentic Parmigiano-Reggiano. Don’t forget to sample Culatello di Zibello, a delicacy often paired with local Lambrusco.
3. Ferrara (1 hour by train)
Ferrara is a charming Renaissance city. Start with the imposing Este Castle and its moat, then walk along the well-preserved medieval walls. For food, try cappellacci di zucca, pasta filled with pumpkin, or the bold flavors of salama da sugo, a slow-cooked pork sausage.
4. Dozza (45 minutes by car)
This tiny hilltop village is like an open-air art museum. Every street is adorned with vibrant murals, and the Rocca di Dozza houses a fascinating wine museum. Sip Albana or Sangiovese wines here and enjoy the town’s peaceful atmosphere.
5. Sasso Marconi ( 30 minutes by car, 50 minutes by train)
Just outside Bologna, Sasso Marconi is perfect for nature lovers. Explore the rugged Monte Adone trails, or enjoy a quiet meal featuring porcini mushrooms and tagliatelle. It’s a great spot for a slower pace.
6. Vignola ( 40 minutes by car, 1 hour and 20 minutes by train)
Famous for its cherries, Vignola also boasts the stunning Rocca di Vignola, a medieval castle with frescoes and great views. While there, try desserts featuring their signature cherries or a slice of torta barozzi, a rich chocolate cake.
7. Maranello (50 minutes by car)
Car enthusiasts will love Maranello, the home of Ferrari. Visit the Ferrari Museum, then take a factory tour if time allows. Pair the thrill of fast cars with local specialties like tigelle, a flatbread served with cured meats and cheeses.
8. Brisighella ( 1 hour by car, 1 hour and 30 minutes by two trains)
This picturesque village in the Apennines is straight out of a storybook. Stroll along Via degli Asini, visit the fortress, and taste the region’s prized DOP extra virgin olive oil. The views are unforgettable, and so are the local cheeses, like formaggio di fossa-aged in a cave
9. Castell'Arquato (1 hour and 30 minutes by train)
Castell’Arquato is a romantic medieval gem. Climb the Visconti Fortress for panoramic views, then explore the town’s charming streets. Sample Gutturnio wine, a robust red, and pair it with torta fritta, fried dough served with cured meats.
10. Imola (50 minutes by car or train)
Famous for its racetrack, Imola also has a rich history. Visit the Rocca Sforzesca fortress or catch an event at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. For a taste of Imola, order piadina Romagnola, a stuffed flatbread, at a local trattoria.
11. Borgo Savignano sul Panaro (40 minutes by car)
Explore the medieval village and the Rocca di Savignano, offering breathtaking views of the Panaro Valley. Visit the Romanesque Church of San Marco, then savor local tortellini and Lambrusco at a nearby agriturismo. Perfect for history, nature, and food lovers.
12.Venice (1 hour 30 minutes by train)
Wander through the iconic canals and bridges of this UNESCO World Heritage city. Visit landmarks like St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace; and the Rialto Bridge, or take a gondola ride for a quintessential Venetian experience. 13. Sassi di Roccamalatina (1 hour 20 minutes by car)
Explore the stunning natural beauty of this park, known for its dramatic rock formations and panoramic views. Hike the scenic trails, visit the Roccamalatina Castle,and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of forests and cliffs. Ideal for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. 14.Faenza (1 hour)
Faenza is world-renowned for its ceramics. Visit the International Museum of Ceramics to learn about the art form and pick up a unique piece as a souvenir. Food-wise, try passatelli, a traditional pasta in broth, or a glass of local Albana wine.
15.Ravenna ( 1 hour and 25 minutes by car)
Ravenna is a bit further afield but worth the trip for its stunning Byzantine mosaics. Visit the Basilica of San Vitale and Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. End your visit with piadina stuffed with prosciutto and squacquerone cheese
16.Zocca ( 1 hour and 10 minutes by car)
This mountain town is the birthplace of Vasco Rossi, a beloved Italian singer, but it’s also known for its chestnut-based dishes. Try chestnut flour pancakes or gnocchi, and take a walk in the surrounding forested hills. Also visit Caseificio Rosola, the last remaining Parmigiano Reggiano dairy the uses the milk from the Vacca Bianca White Modenese cow.
17. Monteveglio ( 40 minutes by car)
Part of the Parco Regionale dell’Abbazia di Monteveglio, this small village features a serene medieval abbey surrounded by lush hills. It’s a fantastic spot for wine lovers, with many wineries producing Pignoletto sparkling wine.
18.Savigno ( 45 minutes by car)
Known as the “truffle capital” of Bologna’s hills, Savigno is a haven for foodies. Visit during truffle season (fall) for the best experience. Make sure you are there for Tartaflo, the festival starts the end of October and goes through to early November. Try fresh truffle-topped dishes and stroll through the quiet countryside. Don’t miss lunch or dinner at my culinary alma mater Amerigo 1934, a Michelin starred restaurant for 27 years running.
19.Castelvetro di Modena (40 minutes)
A picture-perfect medieval village with rolling hills and vineyards. Visit during grape harvest season to see the Lambrusco production. Enjoy a glass of this sparkling red paired with local cheeses. Don’t miss lunch or dinner at Locanda del Fuedo and browse balsamic vinegar at Acetaia La Vecchia Dispensa
20. Montefiore Conca ( 2 hours, 40 minutes by car)
Montefiore Conca is a hilltop village offering stunning views and a well-preserved castle. The village is peaceful, and its trattorias serve delicious homemade pastas and game dishes like wild boar.
21.San Giovanni in Persiceto ( 35 minutes by car)
This colorful town is known for its vibrant murals and unique circular old town layout. It’s also a great place to try crescentine, a fried bread served with meats and cheeses.
