San Sebastián-A Culinary Excitement

San Sebastián, or Donostia as the locals call it in Basque language, is a jewel of Spain’s northern coast, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary culinary heritage.

Nestled along the Bay of Biscay, the city bodly boasts golden beaches like the La Concha, situated near the Old Town, and dramatic green hills, offering an idyllic backdrop for exploration and relaxation. Think Game of Thrones!

San Sebastián evolved from a modest fishing village to a swanky resort in the 19th century, attracting aristocrats seeking its mild climate and seaside allure.

Today, it effortlessly blends its old-world charm with modern sophistication, evident in its vibrant old town, Parte Vieja, and contemporary landmarks like the Kursaal Events Centre.

The city is a mecca for culinarians celebrated as a global gastronomic hot spot. Basque cuisine, deeply rooted in tradition, highlights fresh, local ingredients from both land and sea. San Sebastián is particularly famous for its *pintxos*( not tapas, that’s in the South) —small, delectable bites served in bars that transform snacking and drinking into an exciting culinary experience.

Wandering the streets of Parte Vieja, visitors encounter countless establishments offering creative variations of these delicacies, including my friend’s restaurants Casa Gandaris, just awarded the prize of 43rd most notable restaurant in the world. Here chef and owner Oihane Agirre approach to pintxos is a delicate balance between tradition and innovation. Classics like “gilda”-anchovy, olive, and pepper skewers—are elevated to new heights. What sets Casa Gandarias apart is its commitment to quality. The ingredients are impeccable, from the seemingly transparent jamón ibérico that practically melts on the palate to the impeccable seafood that reflects the feeling of the nearby Cantabrian Sea.

Additionally at Gandaris order the  “brocheta de gambas” or the “txuleta”-prime rib steak grilled to perfection—is nothing short of spectacular. Cooked over an open flame, it achieves a smoky crust and succulent interior that is memorable.

For fine dining enthusiasts, San Sebastián is unmatched. It boasts one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita in the world, 17! with establishments like Arzak, Akelarre, and Mugaritz consistently ranking among the best globally. These restaurants elevate Basque flavors with modern techniques, and inventive execution of dishes that will leave you wanting more.

The surrounding landscape further enriches the experience. Lush mountains, rolling vineyards, and rugged cliffs make for sought after location for hiking and outdoor enthusiasts. The beach La Concha is a beautiful landscape to enjoy a walk after dinner. The seaside town that scatter the coast make for great day trips by boat and Biarritz and other popular spots in France are also nearby.

San Sebastián captivates with its beauty, history, and unparalleled devotion to cuisine, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of culture, flavor, and natural wonder.

Here’s a list of my favorite places on a recent trip there this past year-While there I also enlisted the expert assistance of friends there local legendary guide Eloisa Patat and famed cook book writer and chef Marti Buckley. Marti’s best selling cookbooks Basque Country and the Book of Pinxtos are definite must have in your collection.
